A Ramble Round the Globe Revisited: In the Footsteps of Tommy Dewar by Malcolm Greenwood is a fascinating whisky and travel book published in 1999. It follows the trail of one of the most colourful figures in Scotch whisky history: Thomas ‘Tommy’ Dewar.

At the end of the nineteenth century, Tommy Dewar travelled around the world promoting Dewar’s Scotch whisky and establishing new markets. His experiences were recorded in his own book, A Ramble Round the Globe. More than a century later, Malcolm Greenwood decided to retrace Dewar’s journey and see how the world had changed.

Greenwood’s journey takes the reader from Speyside to Boston, New York, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco, before continuing to Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, China and Hong Kong.

The book is therefore much more than a conventional whisky guide. It combines whisky history, travel writing, social history and humour, comparing the experiences of two travelling whisky salesmen separated by more than a century.

That comparison is particularly appropriate because Greenwood himself spent years in the whisky industry and was international sales manager for Glenfarclas Single Malt Scotch Whisky, travelling extensively as part of his work.

Illustrations by Erik Foseid complement Greenwood’s personal and entertaining account.
