Whisky by Aeneas MacDonald is one of the classics of whisky literature. Originally published in 1930, it was unusual in approaching whisky primarily from the perspective of the drinker and enthusiast rather than simply concentrating on production and commerce.

Aeneas MacDonald was the pseudonym of Scottish journalist and writer George Malcolm Thomson OBE. His writing is witty, opinionated and remarkably forward-looking, covering whisky history and character, production and blending, geography and the practical business of judging, buying, storing and enjoying whisky.

This 2016 Birlinn hardcover edition presents MacDonald’s original text together with an extensive appreciation, commentary and analysis by whisky writer Ian Buxton. Period illustrations are also included, allowing the reader to compare the whisky world of 1930 with that of today. The edition contains 192 pages.

This particular copy has additional collector interest because it contains a handwritten inscription and signature by Ralfy Mitchell, known internationally for his independent whisky reviews at Ralfy.com.

In his inscription, Ralfy describes the work as one of the best whisky books ever created and praises its direct, unsanitised approach to whisky. The inscription includes his signature, “ralfy.com”, the words “@ the bothy” and is dated September 2021.

Ralfy Mitchell has built a substantial international following through his independent, educational and deliberately non-corporate whisky reviews.

Because this is a substantial handwritten endorsement of the book rather than simply a signature, this copy has considerably more personality and collector appeal than a standard used example.
